Times of IndiaSaibal Dasgupta, TNN, Jun 29, 2010, 06.55pm IST BEIJING: Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari is visiting Beijing during the joint military exercise between China and his country on the Muslim dominated border region of Ningxia early next month. During the visit, Zardari is likely to push Chinese leaders to take a final decision on the propose sale of nuclear power reactors. Going by remarks by the Chinese foreign ministry on Tuesday, he is pretty close to achieving his goal while offering to help China curb Uighur separatists in the China-Pakistan border region. Beijing is simultaneously wooing the Pakistani government and wooing fundamentalists forces like Jamat-e-Islami for this purpose. Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang said his country's civilian nuclear cooperation with Pakistan is not aimed at any third country. Sino-Pakistan cooperation is in line with international non-proliferation regime, he said. But Qin did not reply a question on whether Beijing w

» US & China play 'chicken' in the Yellow Sea - 30-June-2010
Indian ExpressC. Raja MohanPosted: Wed Jun 30 2010, 16:16 A first rate crisis is brewing in and around the Korean Peninsula that may well come to a head this week. The escalation of military tensions in the Yellow Sea that separates the Korean Peninsula from the Chinese mainland is likely to take two pathways - one originating in Pyongyang and the other in Beijing - or both. As Washington and Seoul respond with diplomatic and military measures to the alleged sinking of a South Korean naval ship, 'Cheonan', at the end of March by a small North Korean submarine, Pyongyang is promising more defiant action. In a statement issued on Monday, the North Korean government referred to its "nuclear deterrent", a term that it had used before conducting nuclear tests in October 2006 and May 2009. This time around it went a step further to warn that it had a new approach to demonstrate its strategic capabilities. China, in turn, has condemned the US-South Korea military exercises planned for this w

EurasianetJune 27, 2010 - 12:30pmby Joanna Lillis and David Trilling Just weeks after Kyrgyzstan's worst violence in the post-Soviet era, voters turned out in larger-than-expected numbers on June 27 to cast ballots in a constitutional referendum. Many voters said they yearned for a return of stability to Kyrgyzstan. Amid a general atmosphere of skepticism in the southern city of Osh, scene of worst interethnic fighting June 10-14, many ethnic Uzbeks defied expectations that they would stay away from the polls. Uzbeks appear to have suffered disproportionately during the violent clashes, in which hundreds were killed and hundreds of thousands driven from their homes. Roza Otunbayeva, the leader of the provisional government, visited Osh to cast her referendum ballot. "Quite a lot of people are saying that our country is on the brink of collapse," she said. "However, we, the citizens of the republic, will show the whole of the international community today that Kyrgyzstan is unified and

Christian TodaySIM AustraliaTuesday, 22 June 2010, 16:38 (EST) The name of the city where Mutalip was born remained the same for thousands of years. When Mutalip’s grandfather was a boy, he was one of about a million Uighur (WEE-gur) people living in this desert oasis. At that time the region had a very clear Uighur majority, and the official language was Uighur. Now the city has a new name. The official language is Chinese and all commerce and higher education must be done in Chinese. Even as little as six years ago, when Mutalip graduated from college, 80% of the teachers and 90% of the students there were Uighur. Today that same college has just 20% Uighur teachers and 3% Uighur students. Last year, as Mutalip was reading about the history of the Uighur people, he wondered where many of the modern-day rules about living in Uighur society originated. He studied various Muslim rules and regulations, but found that they did not completely explain some of the things he was seeing

Spiegel06/30/2010By Sven Röbel and Holger StarkA Chapter from the Cold War ReopensEspionage Probe Casts Shadow on Ties with ChinaA new espionage case is putting pressure on ties between Germany and China. German prosecutors are investigating senior Chinese officials who they believe spied on Falun Gong supporters in Germany. The developments have seriously strained relations and brought back practices last used during the Cold War. When German Chancellor Angela Merkel flies to Beijing in July, she will have plenty of the usual accolades for the Chinese. She will say that relations between the two countries are excellent and communication is amicable and intense. "I believe that one can say that relations are gaining a lot of momentum," the chancellor typically says on such occasions. What Merkel will probably not mention publicly is the other side of the German-Chinese relationship, which is also gathering momentum. It takes place in the world of espionage and intelligence agenci

'Mental Torture' Alleged June 29, 2010 2010-06-21 Detainees in China face more mental than physical abuse, a U.N. rapporteur says. AFP Manfred Nowak gives a press conference in Johannesburg, Oct. 29, 2009. WASHINGTON—China’s prison system commonly subjects detainees to mental torment rather than physical abuse, according to a United Nations special rapporteur, although reforms are under way. Manfred Nowak, the U.N. Special Rapporteur on Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, told an Open Society Institute gathering here that authorities in China set out to “break the will” of convicts and detainees to make them believe that they have committed a crime. “It’s much more mental torture—what they call 'reeducation.' That is on the one hand reeducation-through-labor camps. If you go in there it is just unbelievable what kind of brainwashing those people have to go through,” he said. Most inmates at reeducation

Tibetan cultural figures 'detained after protests' June 29, 2010 International observers have called for action following accusations that China has been arresting leading Tibetan writers, poets and musicians in a crackdown on cultural figures, as The World Tonight's Paul Moss reports. Tashi Dhondup has reportedly been sentenced to 15 months hard labour The lyrics of the song are not exactly subtle: "The occupation and denial of freedom of Tibetans/This is torture without trace." Another sounds a note of defiance: "Courageous patriotic martyrs/Have sacrificed their lives for Tibet/It pains my heart thinking of them/And the tears fall from my eyes." Defiant the words may be, but they appear to have cost their writer his freedom. Obama invites China's Hu for state visit June 29, 2010 Reuters June 27, 2010 TORONTO - President Barack Obama has invited Chinese President Hu Jintao for a state visit, a U.S. official said Saturday, as the two powers seek to narrow economic and political differences. The date of the state visit, which will be only the third hosted by Obama since he took office in January 2009, has not been set, White House adviser Jeffrey Bader told reporters on the sidelines of a G20 summit in Toronto. Hu accepted the invitation, Bader added. The announcement came a week after China began to address one of the disputes that has bedeviled their relationship this year, ending the yuan's da facto peg to the dollar that had been in place since mid-2008. The United States wants China to allow the yuan to rise more rapidly to help shrink Washington's trade deficit. U.S. lawmakers accuse China of keeping its exports artificially cheap and stealing U.S. jobs. Obama told Hu he welcomed China's move toward gr

Nepal tries to send refugee children back to Tibet: ICT June 29, 2010 By Claire Cozens (AFP) – Jun 18, 2010 KATHMANDU — Nepalese police this month tried to forcibly repatriate a group of sick Tibetan refugees, some of them children, the International Campaign for Tibet alleged in a report released Saturday. The Washington-based campaign group said the seven refugees, among them a seven-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy, hid for days in a forest in Nepal after escaping police who had threatened to send them back across the border. All seven were undernourished and the two children required urgent medical attention when they finally reached the Nepalese capital, according to the ICT, which said it had received reports of several such cases involving Tibetans. Every year, hundreds of Tibetans make the difficult and dangerous journey across the border into neighbouring Nepal, fleeing alleged political and religious repression in Chinese-controlled Tibet. Dalai Lama: Respecting Tibetan Rights Key to Compassionate China June 29, 2010 By Tsering Tsomo Phayul June 28, 2010 Yokohama, Japan, June 28 - If the Tibetan people can achieve genuine autonomy in protecting and promoting their culture, language, identity, and way of life, it can also provide hope for a more just and compassionate society in China where the frenzied rush to accumulate wealth and power has led to the rapid erosion of moral principles, said His Holiness the Dalai Lama at an informal gathering of some 70 Tibetans and their Japanese supporters this morning at the Intercontinental Grand Hotel in Yokohama. The Dalai Lama said the Tibetan people?s struggle for autonomy is based on valid historical and cultural basis. "Since the 7th century, the Tibetan people have developed their own language, religion, and culture without seeking any help from outsiders," he said, adding the most comprehensive knowledge on Buddhism, for instance, is available only in Tibetan lang

By Keith B. Richburg Washington Post Staff Writer Tuesday, June 29, 2010; A11 BEIJING - Ten years ago, China's leadership launched its "Go West" campaign, an ambitious plan to develop and modernize the country's poor western hinterlands. The aim was simple: to close the region's yawning income gap with the more prosperous east and assuage restive minority populations, particularly in Xinjiang and Tibet. Chinese officials rattle off all the statistical measures of the program's success: Highways were constructed. Houses were built. Nomads were resettled in "model" villages. Millions of people have electricity and clean drinking water. A rail line links Beijing in the east to Lhasa on the Tibetan plateau. And annual economic growth in the west is about 12 percent, higher than the national average. But beneath the barrage of official statistics lies another reality. But the US-based organisation Human Rights Watch (HRW) charged that the dialogue, which began in 1995, has "consistently failed" to produce substantive results because it is not linked to other issues "such as trade, investment and the environment. » China's push to develop its west hasn't closed income gap with east, critics say... - 28-June-2010
By Keith B. RichburgWashington Post Staff WriterTuesday, June 29, 2010; A11 BEIJING - Ten years ago, China's leadership launched its "Go West" campaign, an ambitious plan to develop and modernize the country's poor western hinterlands. China's west - defined as the dozen provinces and "autonomous regions" stretching from Inner Mongolia to Xinjiang and Tibet -

US regrets jail sentence on Tibetan environment activist: report June 28, 2010 Phayul June 26, 2010 Dharamsala, June 26 - The United States has expressed its regrets over the sentencing to 15 years imprisonment of a Tibetan environment once honored by Chinese government as 'Philanthropist of the year', according to a media report. US State Department Spokesperson said, "We certainly regret that action and it is something that we continue to talk to China about." The spokesperson was responding to questions about Karma Samdrup and his two brothers. Karma is believed to have earned the wrath of Chinese government due to his attempts to secure his two brothers? release. His brothers, Rinchen Samdup and Chime Namgyal, both environmentalists, had publicly denounced Chinese officers for poaching endangered Tibetan species in their native Chamdo. Karma is the latest victim of what many Tibet activists and analysts say is China?s recent stepping up of control against influential Tib

Rangzen Alliance, Switzerland - Jamyang Norbu June 28, 2010 Shadow Tibet June 24, 2010 I was in Switzerland at the beginning of this month and gave a slideshow and talk at Zurich on Saturday the 5th, "Was Tibet an Independent and Sovereign State?," based on my essay Independent Tibet - The Facts, but with a more polemical title. The talk was well attended by Tibetans. In fact the auditorium was packed full, and there was a good Q & A session. The talk had been organized by Tibetans in Switzerland who wanted to start a Rangzen Alliance group in that country. Before my talk I had a long meeting with these volunteers, and at the conclusion of my public talk I announced the formation of Rangzen Alliance, Switzerland. The newly designated president of RA-Switzerland, Rinchen Dorjee also spoke, emphasizing the importance of the goal of rangzen for all Tibetans. He pointed out how activists and intellectuals inside Tibet were expressing their desire for freedom and independence

China rewrites history of Korean War June 28, 2010 Malcolm Moore in Shanghai The Telegraph June 25, 2010 On the 60th anniversary of the Korean War, China has finally rewritten its history of how the conflict began to point the finger of responsibility at North Korea. Until now, the Chinese have staunchly supported their North Korean allies, along whose side they fought in the war. China previously insisted that the war was waged out of American aggression. The official title of the conflict on the mainland is "The War to Resist America and Aid Korea". Chinese history textbooks state that the Korean War began when "the United States assembled a United Nations army of 15 countries and defiantly marched across the border and invaded North Korea, spreading the flames of war to our Yalu river." The official Chinese media stated for the first time that it was North Korea that dealt the first blow. In a special report, Xinhua's International Affairs journal said: "On

A "Center for Quitting the Chinese Communist Party" does exist in Flushing, New York. Funeral Games* - Jamyang Norbu June 28, 2010 Shadow Tibet June 26, 2010 Yesterday was the 60th anniversary of the start of the Korean War. That and all the recent news from North Korea, especially the rumour that "dear leader" (Kim Jong-Il) was seriously ill, brought back memories of the time I was editor of the Tibetan language newspaper MANGTSO in Dharamshala in 1995 when "dear leader?s" father "Great Leader" (Kim Il-Sung) died and I had to scribble a quick report. Inevitably I came out with something way too extravagant and long for our small paper. The other editors, Lhasang Tsering la and Tashi Tsering la in their editorial wisdom replaced it with a brief report in the news round-up column. My original piece is now, fifteen years later, admittedly not du jour, but the reader can have it for whatever entertainment value it might have retained. Few pleasures can beat the funeral of someone you loathe. It is, I admit, not a very Buddhist sentiment, but

Fear overshadows Tibetan mindset as Samdrup's trial awaits justice June 25, 2010 One India June 24, 2010 New York June 24 (ANI) - The ongoing controversy of Tibetan award-winning conservationist and philanthropist Karma Samdrup being tortured by the Chinese captors has evoked fear in the minds of the Tibetans as they fear a border crackdown. Karma, a prominent businessman, was arrested in early January on charges of robbing graves and stealing cultural artifacts. His supporters, however, claim that he is being unfairly punished for lobbying the authorities for the release of his two brothers who sought to expose officials who hunted endangered animals. The supporters also claimed that he was being illegally arrested for trying to save his brothers from labor camp and torture. They are in prison for accusing a local police chief of hunting protected animals in a Tibetan nature preserve. Samdrup was brought to the court for hearing for the first time after six months in police custody y

Chinese army at border June 25, 2010 Deccan Chronicle 50 Years Ago Deccan Chronicle June 25, 2010 New Delhi, June 24 - Prime Minister Nehru said here today that there was a large build-up of Chinese forces in Tibet "and that came to our frontiers too" but he could not give any reliable information "at what corners it was or where it was more or less." Mr Nehru, who was replying to questions at a press conference about reports of such build-up near the Sikkim border, said that some of the stories which appeared had no foundation in fact. "Most of the stories, I take it, come from refugees or odd people coming over. There may be some little truth occasionally but they tend to get exaggerated." Mr Nehru said that earlier there was a report that 500 Tibetans had been pushed into Sikkim to occupy grazing lands. He had made inquiries from the Sikkim Government but they knew nothing about it. They said it was just some refugees who had come. That incident had jus

Tibetan activist sentenced to 15 years in prison June 25, 2010 By ANITA CHANG The Associated Press (AP) June 25, 2010 BEIJING (AP) - A Tibetan environmentalist once praised as a model philanthropist was sentenced to 15 years in prison Thursday on charges of grave robbing and dealing in looted antiquities, in a case supporters said was aimed at punishing his activism. The trial of Karma Samdrup came after he spoke up for his two brothers, also activists, who were detained after accusing local officials in eastern Tibet of poaching endangered species. Authorities in tightly controlled Tibet are extremely sensitive to social activism and criticism, either explicit or implied. The cases come amid increased repression of Tibetan intellectuals, an echo of the massive security crackdown that followed rioting in the capital, Lhasa, in 2008 in which at least 22 people died. In addition to the prison sentence, Karma Samdrup was stripped of his political rights for five years and fined 10,000 yu
