Rinpoche, who is on a two-day visit here, held a meeting with the members of the Tibetan community at the Tsokhasum Hall at Nam-Nang here. Rinpoche advised the community members to continue their struggle for the cause of Tibetan Freedom and the welfare of Tibetans especially those in Tibet. He also appreciated the support of the community members in this regard. He also emphasized the middle path as espoused by the Dalai Lama and urged the Tibetan people to continue on this path for fulfillment of their aims and objectives. 21-June-2010 NZ lawmaker clashes with Chinese security June 21, 2010 Reuters June 18, 2010 WELLINGTON (Reuters) - A New Zealand lawmaker holding a Tibetan flag clashed on Friday with Chinese officials during a visit by China's vice president to the country's parliament, local media reported. Russel Norman, co-leader of the minority Green Party, was holding the flag and calling out for democracy in Tibet as Xi Jinping arrived at the parliament building for a round of official meetings. A small group of China supporters, including several identified as security officials, tried to block Norman with an umbrella and then grabbed the Tibetan flag from him, media said. "I think it's pretty outrageous that Chinese security can come to our country and push around an elected member of parliament simply because we are standing up for democracy and freedom in our own country on our own parliamentary grounds," the NZ Press Association reported Norman as saying after the incident. Norman said he was

21-June-2010 Sherlock Holmes returns - from Nepal June 21, 2010 Sify (India) June 18, 2010 More than 80 years after Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote the last Sherlock Holmes story, the taciturn, relentless and utterly fascinating sleuth is back again - and this time from Nepal. House no 583 Museum Marg in Kathmandu is as different from 221 B Baker Street as Dr John Watson is from Ted Riccardi. Yet it is the latter - an American scholar and Indologist - who has assumed the mantle of Watson, the chronicler of most of Holmes' adventures. From his adopted home in Kathmandu, the 73-year-old has brought Holmes back from the grave in his first work of fiction, 'The Oriental Casebook of Sherlock Holmes'. Narrating the British detective's fascinating exploits in Tibet, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and even the 'Dutch Indies', the book was originally published by Random House in 2003, but has now been brought to Nepal by the Kathmandu-based Himal Books. To scholars and linguists, Riccardi needs no introduction

21-June-2010 NZ lawmaker claims Chinese security attacked him June 21, 2010 By RAY LILLEY (AP) WELLINGTON, New Zealand — A New Zealand lawmaker accused the Chinese vice president's security staff of pushing him, hitting him with an umbrella and tearing from his grasp a Tibetan flag during his one-man protest Friday. Green Party co-leader Russel Norman says the clash occurred on the steps of Parliament as Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping arrived for a meeting with officials. Norman said he was surrounded by Xi's guards as he waved a Tibetan flag and called for democracy in the Himalayan territory, which comunist troops occupied in the early 1950s. "The Chinese security guards elbowed me out of the way, and then I got an umbrella over the top of me and they took the flag off my hands and trampled on it," Norman told reporters. Parliament's speaker Lockwood Smith immediately called for an investigation. Norman later laid a formal complaint of assault with police and sought the detent

21-June-2010 Is Chinese threat to India real? June 21, 2010 By Afshain Afzal The News (India) June 18, 2010 Quite recently, it was reported that Chinese Navy ships visited Indian port of Cochin to impress upon Indian strategists that New Delhi is no match to Chinese military might. Many Indian strategists and analysts consider that Chinese presence in the Indian Ocean is a warning to Indian Navy that Chinese can show their presence every where. It is being feared that with seven destinations to support China including in Maldives, Bangladesh, Burma, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Pakistan, India stands no where. Indian Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Nirmal Kumar Verma is also scheduled to visit Sri Lanka shortly to improve defence ties and keep China off Sri Lanka. It is one record that Indian former Defence Minister, George Fernandez claimed that India?s Enemy No.1 was China and not Pakistan. If we link the presence of Chinese Navy in Indian Ocean, the claim of George Fernandez seems true but is it

The monks who fled across the Himalayas ask it quietly, as do the exile politicians. Even the angry young activists are careful how they raise the issue. But as the man at the center of the Tibetan exile movement approaches his 75th birthday, the question has become inescapable: What happens after the Dalai Lama dies? Directed by Ritu Sarin and Tenzing Sonam. In English, Mandarin and Tibetan with English subtitles. Not rated. 79 minutes. At the Opera Plaza in San Francisco and Shattuck Cinemas in Berkeley. "The Sun Behind the Clouds" is a well-made and sobering look at the current state of Tibet's battle for some degree of autonomy. Most notably, the film offers footage secretly shot in Tibet showing China's brutal crackdown against independence protesters in 2008, and shows us dissension within the movement. The documentary made the news columns in January when China, in what may have been a punitive move, pulled two films from the Palm Springs International Film Festival, which was showing "The Sun Behind the Clouds." 21-June-2010 China now pressuring Tibetans outside politics June 21, 2010 By CARA ANNA (AP) BEIJING — Karma Samdrup was always the kind of Tibetan the Chinese government liked. The antiques dealer's cultural and environmental preservation efforts won national awards and praise, and he stayed out of the region's highly charged politics. But next week he'll stand trial on what rights groups say is a trumped-up charge of grave-robbing amid the largest crackdown on Tibetan intellectuals since the Cultural Revolution. China's government has grown increasingly sensitive about Tibet in the two years since rioting in the regional capital of Lhasa left 22 people dead and led to the most sustained Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule in decades. Violent clashes and demonstrations swept Tibetan towns throughout western China, where occasional protests still continue, and security remains extremely tight. Now, activist groups say a growing number of Tibetan intellectuals are coming under pressure from

Woeser had spent some time in Lhasa in February and March 2010 and this blogpost refers to that time. Since the earthquake that took place on April 14, 2010 in Kham, Woeser's blog writings focused on monitoring the situation and bringing out news, which perhaps explains the almost two month delay in posting this article. 21-June-2010 The Indo-US Strategic Dialogue: Restoring Faith In The Partnership? June 21, 2010 By Sean Angiolillo Eurasia Review June 18, 2010 Has the recently concluded Indo-US Strategic Dialogue restored any faith in the partnership between these two democracies? Or was it just another example of symbolism lacking deliverables? More broadly, how valid is the Indian perception that the strategic partnership has been downgraded in favor of the US? immediate security challenges in Afghanistan and Pakistan, as well as its financial dependency on China? Has President Obama in fact discarded Bush?s strategic vision of Asia, where India would play the key role as a counterweight to China? The fate of the Indo-US strategic partnership lies in an examination of both countries? short and long-term interests. While India and the US share the long term challenge of a rising China, Af-Pak is essentially a short-term challenge for the US, but most certainly a long-term problem for India. Thus, Af-Pak, much mo

Family members and relatives of Samdup Gyatso, 28, made efforts to locate him since his arrest on May 1 this year for staging a protest against the Chinese government's handling of the Kyegudo earthquake relief funds. They knew his whereabouts on June 13, according to Samdup's younger brother Tenpa Dhargyal. Dhargyal said his brother had been tortured in prison and is in poor physical condition. He said his brother's initial plan was to hold his protest on the birthday of the Panchen Lama on April 25. On May 1, Samdup shouted anti government slogans at a busy Tsuglakhang where many Tibetans had gathered for religious activities. "Invite the Dalai Lama to Tibet, ?release the Panchen Lama, ? he ch

This is something you can't understand until you've gone through it. The refugee experience means undergoing difficulties such as being forced to leave your homeland, being displaced from your social and cultural context, leaving behind everything you own, witnessing death and destruction and suffering tragic personal loss. These are experiences that can not be compensated for once they happen. Today is June 20, World Refugee Day. Everyone's eyes are turned, albeit temporarily, to the "unwelcome guests" who were forced leave their countries, mainly due to poverty and war. Since December 2000, when the UN adopted a resolution to celebrate World Refugee Day, June 20 has been an opportunity to remember and commend refugees for the courage they've shown in surviving and their ability to remain posi

Authorities in the city of Urumqi, which exploded in deadly riots last July 5, will "increase the police presence in key places, vital sectors and public areas," the Xinjiang region's state-run Tianshannet website said. Police will also ramp up inspections of all people transporting and using dangerous explosive materials and "severely deal" with those found violating the rules. A recently leaked speech by Xia Lin, a senior editor at Xinhua, China’s government-run news agency, suggests that even though press controls have been somewhat loosened in recent years, leaders still rely heavily on secret reports filed by Xinhua journalists. Other evidence indicates this fault-prone system is actually gaining in importance. In the speech last month Mr Xia revealed that the news agency’s public reports about an eruption of ethnic rioting in the far-western region of Xinjiang last July had played down revenge attacks by Han Chinese against members of the region’s biggest ethnic group, the Uighurs. Mr Xia said it was only after reading a classified “internal reference” report on the reprisals

18-June-2010 Foreign2010-06-18 17:54 BEIJING, Friday 18 June 2010 (AFP) - Police in the capital of China's restive Xinjiang will launch a security clampdown ahead of the anniversary of ethnic riots, the government said Friday, in an indication they fear further unrest. Xinjiang had already been beefing up security and authorities have warned of a continued "separatist" threat in the region after the violence in Urumqi last July between Muslim ethnic Uighurs and members of China's dominant Han group. The violence saw nearly 200 people killed and up to 1,700 injured, according to government figures. The new clampdown will be

18-June-2010 The reality of the 'China Fantasy' June 18, 2010 Foreign Policy Blog Posted By Will Inboden June 16, 2010 Is the "China Fantasy" starting to get deflated by reality? Three years ago, Jim Mann's provocative book of that title identified the "China Fantasy: Why Capitalism Will Not Bring Democracy to China" as the dogmatic belief of many Western political and commercial elites that China's economic liberalization and growth would lead inevitably to democracy at home and responsible conduct abroad. The operative word was "inevitably" - the assumption being that China's remarkable economic success would automatically produce a middle class that demanded greater political rights, and that China's growing integration with the global economy would produce benign and responsible international behavior. Based on this assumption, the corollary policy prescription for the West was to pursue a policy of engagement and encouragement towards China's rise. This paradigm
