September 23, 2011 These days it is a fact that Chinese made goods are a feature of life in most Western countries. Stroll into any store in America or Europe – from the eponymous small town Mom and Pop hardware store, to a faceless corporate mega-store – and you will likely be greeted by shelf upon shelf of Chinese made goods. Indeed, in many places it is not unusual to find stores where up to 80% of the items on sales originate from a factory somewhere in China. Even if the particular goods you are purchasing aren't Chinese made, the register that the clerk rings your purchase on up might well be. As might the clerk's shoes, uniform and wrist watch. Not to mention the light fixtures that you are standing under and the flooring that you are walking on. Chinese made goods are that common. Unfortunately, while it is an inescapable fact that Chinese made goods are everywhere, it is also an inescapable fact that one of the main reasons t

But for the Chinese themselves, the story goes back much further—at least to the reign of Kangxi, the Qing Dynasty emperor, who ruled for sixty-one years (1661-1722) and, in the official Chinese view, incorporated many lands, including Tibet, into a glorious Chinese empire. September 11th reminds us of the horror we human beings can unleash on ourselves when we allow our human intelligence and powerful technology to be overtaken by hatred.
Two Monks Receive Long Jail Terms in China Amid US Concern September 14, 2011 A Chinese court has sentenced two Tibetan monks to long prison terms Tuesday in an unusual case that has prompted widespread international attention. The United States expressed concern over the 11-year term given another monk Monday. All three monks are accused of contributing to the death of 16-year-old Rigzin Phuntsog, who burned himself to death in March at the Kirti monastery in southwestern Sichuan province. The court Tuesday sentenced Tsering Tenzin to 13 years in prison and Tenchum, who uses only one name, to 10 years. Both were accused of instigating and assisting in Phuntsog's death. The official Xinhua news agency said the court was shown evidence that the monks had sent photos of Phuntsog outside of China days before the self-immolation, indicating that it was pre-meditated. It said the monks admitted their guilt after the proceedings. On Monday, the court convicted a monk named Drongdru for havi
